The Honey Bee

Honey bees are categorized as “social” bees, since they dwell in colonies usually composed of around 50,000 – 60,000 workers.

There are 10 different kinds of honey bees around the world, and one hybrid: the Africanized bee. The European Honey Bee Apis Mellifera is normally held by beekeepers in the West, who then collect their honey.

As with numerous kinds of bees, honey bees happen to be suffering from problems, and you may have come across Colony Collapse Disorder or the “missing bees” phenomenon. Honey bees have a significant role, together with beekeepers, in conservation. Honey bees are also utilized extensively in crop pollination too, and as well as other bees, they assist to put food on our plates.

The Bumblebee

Almost all bumblebee colonies are quite small, from 50 to 400 workers, but often 120 to 200. Most species are “social”, but you can also find “social parasite” species, often called “cuckoo bumblebees”. These parasitic bumblebees live in the nests of other bumblebee hosts.

Bumblebees also are outstanding pollinators of all types of flowers, and generally are a pleasant and familiar site in backyards. Their effectiveness as pollinators is in some measure due to their furry figure, furthermore because they have the capability to “buzz pollinate” .

Mason bees

These kinds of bees are solitary bees. With solitary bees, typically, a single female mates, then constructs a nest on its own, and provides for the egg cells which will turn out to be larvae.

Yet, a few solitary bees in one sense, do stay in a simple form of society in that several individual bees may nest near to one another, and perhaps, actually share nest guarding and foraging duties.

Mason bees prefer to generate nests in crevices, occasionally in old mortar, while leaf cutter bees like hollow stems and readymade openings in wood. Leafcutter bees will by no means damage the plant from which it has detached the section of leaf. Solitary bees are progressively more being reared for commercial bee pollination. This is certainly happening with bumblebees too.

Carpenter Bees

These are also solitary bees, and are generally excellent pollinators.

And in addition, digger bees normally create their nests in soil. They have furry bodies, and can be up to 3cm in length.

Carpenter bees differ. Some species for instance, may have a ginger brown, hairy body, or have primarily black glossy bodies. The Violet Carpenter Bee loves to nest in old wood. Recently, it has been spotted in the united kingdom, but is certainly a recent arrival.

Mining Bee

Not being wrongly identified as Digger Bees, Mining bees belong to another type of family of bees altogether – and it’s an enormous family of bees, comprising thousands of types of bees throughout the world. Mining bees are solitary, although females commonly create nests quite close to one another.

From the name, you most likely suspected that mining bees dig deep into tunnels and cells underground. It’s possible you’ll find evidence of them in your backyard: small mounds of earth in lawns, borders, or maybe in pots that seem to be somewhat like worm casts. Generally, they seem to favor sandy soil. They never lead to any damage, and indeed, mining bees should be welcomed in the garden, as again, they aren’t only charming tiny insects, they are also useful pollinators of flowers and plants.
